Make the Most of Your Trip to Honolulu
After landing at your Honolulu FBO, see some of our favorite places to visit:
Waikiki
The quintessential trip to Honolulu and the island of Oahu is the lively area of Waikiki. Here, you’ll find great shopping, hotels, restaurants, and most importantly, beaches. The main street of Kalākau Avenue has the biggest name brands and is a great street to walk down to get a sense of the activities in Waikiki.
One of the biggest draws of the island of Oahu is Waikiki beach, lined with the statue of the Duke. Duke Paoa Kahanamoku is a Hawaiian Olympic champion and regarded as the father of surfing. The beach is expansive and surrounded by the impressive scenery of mountains and famous hotels. The water is inviting and a great place to surf the historic waters.
Diamond Head or Koko Head
For those looking for an adventure with great views as a reward, check out the hikes at Diamond Head or Koko Head. These dormant volcanoes offer a steep challenge with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. These hikes are strenuous as they quickly climb elevation. Diamond Head is less difficult than Koko Head as most of the path is paved and well maintained. The top offers panoramic views of the blue water and surrounding mountains.
Koko Head is a great challenge for anyone looking to test their fitness and hiking ability. The hike runs along an old wooden rail line used for transporting material up and down the volcano. You’ll climb just about 1,000 feet in less than a mile. The views and surrounding beaches are well worth the hike. Pearl Harbor Museum
Honolulu has a short, but very notable history. The Pearl Harbor Museum is one of the most unique museums in the country and tells the tale of the events that lead to the United States’ involvement in WWII. The dryland part of the museum provides details and information before and after the war, as well as the United States’ involvement in the war. There are various exhibitions with dioramas and artifacts from the time.
The main exhibit is the USS Arizona Memorial. Riding the boat to the exhibit takes you through the harbor where battleships were docked for deployment. The memorial is truly unique in that it is built over the sunken ship, with fuel still leaking out to this day. It’s a breathtaking museum that records and remembers the tragedy that occurred on December 7th, 1941.
The North Shore
The area directly around Honolulu can be busy at times and feel commercial. Take a road trip to the North Shore of Oahu for stunning beaches and small beach towns. You can find numerous beaches with great surfing culture. The beaches are ideal for relaxing and swimming, but also hold some of the best waves on the planet. Waves average around four to twenty feet but have reached over eighty feet during swells.
One of the most famous beaches on the North Shore is Banzai Pipeline. During the winter months, the beach hosts professional surfers tackling some of the biggest waves in the world. Check out some Christmas jets to view these amazing feats over the holidays. If you are looking to challenge your surfing ability, spend some time on the North Shore. Be confident in your swimming and surfing skills before tackling these waves.
Makapu’u Point
You can find great hiking and beaches around Makapu’u point, with a great lighthouse hike for unbelievable views. The drive to the lighthouse hike has many great spots to stop and enjoy the beaches and scenery. At the lighthouse, you have a great chance to watch whales as they pass by the island to find the best place to birth their calves.
If you are up for a treacherous hike down a rocky path, you’ll be rewarded with tidal pools along the coast. These pools are great spots for swimming and offer a unique experience. Once you finish your hike, check out the town of Waimanalo for a great beach community and staggering mountains.
