What airline memberships can’t change is the system underneath them. You still fly on the airline’s timetable, from the airline’s hubs, through a commercial terminal. For many frequent travelers, that’s the point where club airlines stop adding value.

What Does an Airport VIP Lounge Membership Actually Get You?

An airport VIP lounge membership gets you a quieter, more comfortable place to wait for a commercial flight. It doesn’t remove the wait.

Most lounges offer seating, food, drinks, WiFi and somewhere to work away from the gate. That’s a genuine improvement on the main terminal. But as we cover in our private jet vs first class guide, airline lounges are “often busy and full of distractions.” That makes them a hard place to take a confidential call or prepare for a meeting.

A VIP lounge also doesn’t change anything either side of it. You still pass through commercial security, board at a fixed time and depend on the airline running on schedule. A lounge can’t protect you from the “flight delays and cancellations that often plague commercial airline travel.”

What Is the Private Jet Equivalent of a VIP Lounge?

The private aviation equivalent of a VIP lounge is the FBO, or Fixed-Base Operator. An FBO is a private terminal for charter travelers, crew and private pilots. Instead of a lounge inside a commercial terminal, the whole building is designed around private flyers.

FBOs typically offer:

• Spacious lounges with complimentary refreshments and WiFi

• Sleeping rooms and showers
• Kitchens and restaurants
